Upload Your Questionnaire
1up auto-detects queries, requirements, response types, and answer locations.
1up supports many file types, but each format works best when prepared a certain way. Follow these guidelines to ensure accurate extraction and high-quality answers.
Choose Answer Settings
Language
You can specify the preferred language for all generated answers. 1up will produce every response in that language automatically.
For multi-lingual responses, simply toggle the Flag icon to switch between languages:
Maximum Short Answer Length
1up generates two versions of every answer:
• A short response
• A long response
The maximum answer length controls the short version, ensuring it stays concise. The long response will always be the longest version of any answer 1up can generate.
Data Sources
Choose which tagged knowledge sources 1up should use when generating answers.
• Pick specific tags to narrow the scope
• Or click Select All to use your entire Knowledge Base
This helps ensure the right content influences the final answers.
Writing Style & Tone
In this field, you can provide optional guidance such as:
• “Respond in paragraph format.”
• “Keep answers simple.”
• “Avoid technical explanations.”
These instructions will apply across all generated responses for that questionnaire.
If you add instructions, keep them simple!
1up is already tuned to reflect the tone and style of your connected knowledge. Adding too many rules can degrade answer quality.
Answer Types
1up provides multiple answer formats and status indicators to help you review, refine, and manage your questionnaire responses effectively. Here’s a complete guide to how they work.
Short Answer
A concise version of the response, generated using the maximum word limit you set.
Long Answer
The most detailed answer 1up can generate for the question. Changing your word-length preferences does not impact the long answer. Only the short answer is affected.
Answer Library Suggestions
1up shows similar answers already stored in your Knowledge Base. You can select any previous response instead of the newly generated one, and you can search your entire KB from this view.
Answer Statuses
1up uses a mix of automated and human-defined statuses to help you track answer quality and review progress.
System-Generated Statuses
Unanswered – 1up could not find enough information in your KB.
Skipped – The extracted query wasn’t phrased like a valid question or requirement.
Partial Answer – 1up provided an answer, but it may be incomplete.
Full Answer – A complete, confident response was generated.
Human Review Statuses
Under Review – A user is currently reviewing or editing the answer.
Approved – A human has approved this answer as correct and final.
Note: You can hover over Partial answers to display additional information on why 1up thinks it's an incomplete response:
Answer Labels
Labels are custom, human-defined tags you can assign to answers. Use them to group answers by project, team, topic, or workflow- whatever fits your process.
Once set, teammates can filter responses by labels to speed up the review process.
Regenerating answers
If you're not satisfied with a response, expand the answer and click Regenerate.
During regeneration, you can change:
• Tags
• Answer length
• Instructions
• The query itself
You can regenerate up to five answers at a time using bulk selection.
Pro Tip: You can edit the Question during regeneration to give 1up more guidance on how to respond. Changing the query during regeneration will NOT modify the query in the export. This is helpful if your customer's query wasn't phrased very well. Learn more about regeneration.
Filtering by Text or Keyword
You can quickly search the full questionnaire contents by filtering down to a keyword.
When 1up cannot answer
You may encounter three types of unanswerable queries:
1. Standard Unanswered Question
1up doesn’t have the required information in your KB. This is normal - check your tags, retry, or add more knowledge.
2. Skipped Question
The text didn’t look like a properly defined query or requirement, so 1up ignored it. You can click Regenerate if you want 1up to answer it.
3. PII-Blocked Question
The question contains personally identifiable information—such as names, emails, domains, or URLs. These are always blocked for safety and cannot be overridden.
Why doesn’t 1up provide confidence scores?
Large language models (LLMs) struggle with confidence scoring. This is because LLMs are primarily trained to predict the next word in a sequence based on patterns in the data, not to directly estimate uncertainty or confidence.
1up uses a binary system to determine if a query can or cannot be answered. You might see other products that provide confidence scoring. In our view, these scores are misleading at best. An AI model should never be used to grade its own performance. We believe it’s always best to let the reader decide on the quality of a 1up-generated response.
Best Practices for Different Formats
Excel
For best results, upload a clean spreadsheet with clearly structured, vertical answer columns.
• Label the answer column clearly (e.g., Answers, Vendor Comments).
• 1up will detect Questions, Requirements, up to three dropdowns, and the answer column.
• 1up will not overwrite existing responses (including prefilled dropdowns), so avoid uploading partially completed files.
CSV
1up will identify Questions, Requirements, and additional context.
Answers are placed in the column most likely to represent the answer field.
Word
Upload a clean document without partial answers.
• 1up will identify Questions, Requirements, checkboxes, and tables.
• Answers are exported in blue text for easy review.
1up will identify Questions, Requirements, Checkboxes and Dropdown elements.
However, 1up cannot modify PDF files.
Instead, you’ll receive a new Word document containing your generated answers.

Web Portals
1up identifies Questions, Requirements, Dropdowns, Multiple Choice fields, and Checkboxes. To automate web portals, use the Browser Plugin.
